SF Mission District 1966

The Sixties

I came of age in this decade, graduating from Tamalpais HS in Mill Valley, class of … yep, 1960. I went off to Reed College and in short order I had a psychic crisis, discovered peyote, dropped out, lived in the Haight, went to SF State to become a poet, took a protest trip to Cuba… and dropped out of college again & forever… to join The Movement. I thought I was a Fidelista for years, and paid some serious dues for it, even while marrying, having two sons & becoming a union carpenter. Meanwhile a war raged on & on, leaders were assassinated, Black people were in open rebellion, & San Francisco was the epicenter of a worldwide cultural revolt. These accounts are excerpts from yet another work in progress…like this website…like everything.
