Trees

My lifelong work with wood led me to try cutting lumber and tree segments into type-high pieces for printing. To make the grain stand out, I lightly torched the surface then wire-brushed out the softer wood. A walnut stump provided many worm-eaten pieces which figured later in my ‘Archetextur’ book. As for the leaves…I discovered a couple of years ago that the tulipwood tree in our yard had leaves that were supple and thin enough for printing…just at the point when they started falling in autumn. A few months later these leaves crinkled up and turned brown, so the Shakespeare quote lost its poignancy.
